The Harry Potter book series are a popular book series written by the author J. K Rowling. This series spans 7 books (1 for each of Harry-Potter’s years-at Hogwarts). These books have been-made into movies by the Warner Bros. Pictures company with the final book being split into 2 films. The books generally revolve around a wizard by the name Harry Potter & his journey through the Hogwarts School-of Witchcraft & Wizardry. The many stories tell of Harry Potter overcoming various dangerous obstacles so as to defeat the Dark-wizard by the name Lord Voldemort who had killed both of his parents when he was only 15 months old. The 1st book, “Harry Potter & The Philosopher’s-Stone” was published in the year 1997 by Bloomsbury-in London. The book series basically chronicles the many adventures of a Harry Potter, the titular-character, & his close friends Ronald Weasley & Hermione Granger, both of whom are fellow students at the Hogwarts School-of Witchcraft & Wizardry. The main-story arc concerns Harry Potter’s quest to defeat Lord Voldemort, who’s goal is to gain immortality, conquer the whole of wizarding world, subjugate non magical people, & destroy all of those who happen to stand-in his way. In a nutshell, the series revolves around Harry Potter, who is an orphan who happens to discover at the age-of 11 that he’s a wizard, living in the ordinary world-of non magical people, called Muggles. His magical abilities are inborn & such children are usually invited to attend-an exclusive magical school which teaches all the necessary skills required to succeed in the-wizarding world. Harry becomes one of the students at Hogwarts and it’s here where most-of the events and adventures in the book series take place. Eventually, as Harry Potter develops through adolescence, he gradually learns to overcome many problems that he faces in his day to day life; magical, social & emotional, including the ordinary teenage challenges like friendships, infatuation & school exams, & the greater test-of preparing himself for confrontation in the real-world that lies ahead. Each of the books chronicle 1 year in Harry Potter’s life with the main-narrative being set between the years 1991 to 1998. The book series also contains many flashbacks, that are frequently experienced-by Harry viewing various memories of different other characters using a device by the name Pensieve.
Since the release-of the 1st novel on 30th June 1997, this book series gained immense popularity, great critical acclaim, and a commercial success worldwide. As of July of the year 2013, the book series had sold-between 400 and 450-million copies, making the series one of the best selling series in history. It has been translated in to over 73 languages.The last 4 books consecutively set-records as the fastest selling books in-history, with the last book selling approximately 11-million copies in U.S within the 1st 24 hours of its’ release.
Since the inception-of Harry Potter book series, all the stories that have been released are available as audiobooks. In UK, Harry Potter audio books were narrated-by Stephen Fry, with Jim-Dale narrating for the US editions. Harry Potter audio books are available in both CD & cassette formats, although the cassette formats are no longer in-print because of the general lack-of demand for books in this format.
